A Student’s Perspective on  Common AI Assumptions

Hi everyone, I'm Octavio, the new marketing intern for Gista, here to offer my take on Artificial Intelligence! Is it really good? Is it going to take all our jobs? Will it doom humanity? These are all questions, I hear from friends and peers, and see others asking online. So as a student navigating this technological revolution, I thought I'd share my perspective and hopefully calm your worries along with it.

1. Is AI Good or Bad?

AI in its current state provides more benefits than drawbacks. Personally, it has helped me write more professional emails, stick to my schedule and help with school assignments. Despite this, I do catch myself over-relying on AI, which I worry may negatively impact my critical thinking skills in the long run.

2. Will AI Take All Our Jobs?

This concern is often exaggerated. While it is true that AI has led to job displacement in certain sectors, the current technology is not advanced enough to replace all jobs. Historically, similar fears accompanied the introduction of computers, which in reality, created new job opportunities and transformed industries, ultimately benefiting the labor market. Similarly, I believe AI will likely follow a similar path and create new opportunities rather than eliminate them. Moreover, as public concern over AI’s impact on the job market grows, proactive measures, such as policy interventions and labor actions like the Hollywood writers' strike, suggest that AI will likely coexist with us instead of replacing us.

3. Does AI Pose an Existential Risk?

Although speculative, the potential for AI to pose an existential risk is a reasonable concern. As a fan of the science fiction genre myself, I am concerned about this becoming a reality; however, from a realistic viewpoint: the current trajectory of AI includes safety measures designed to prevent such risk. This is further clarified with the leading AI company, OpenAI committing to developing safe AI systems. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to remain observant and make sure these safeguards are kept in place so that AI maintains its positive impact.

Conclusion

In short, while AI presents both opportunities and challenges, I'm optimistic it will ultimately benefit society. It will not only enhance productivity, and take humanity into the next era of innovation. Like any technology it will undoubtedly bring unforeseen challenges; however, with ongoing research and regulation, AI is likely to contribute positively to our future.
